The Season of FEST22

A Brief Overview of the Season

The 2022 season started with tension – on July 11th, we started the trip to Italy. One of the pilots tested positive for COVID-19 on July 10th, FEST22 was able to drive in half-lap increments because the car kept restarting, and two important technical inspection documents were rejected by the judges. What a start to the season! We couldn’t fix the formula car in Estonia, so we continued repairs in the middle of the night under the light of a headlamp at a local Italian parking lot. Our last-minute efforts paid off and FS Team Tallinn achieved multiple podium places and the overall victory at FS Italy with both cars!
Right after FS Italy, the driverless team headed to FS Czech. The weather conditions in dynamic events were not great, but despite the rain and by making tactically sound moves, we were the only team that managed to finish in the qualifying and endurance races. Thus, another overall victory was achieved! The FEST22 team didn’t go to Czech and went to Austria, where we were hosted by the team of Graz University of Technology before the start of the race. However, luck was not on our side at the beginning of the competition because the car stopped randomly during the skidpad, acceleration, and qualifying. We got mediocre results in the skidpad and acceleration, but by some miracle, we managed to get the second-best time of the day in qualifying, and that was even in the rain. No matter what we tried, the car still wasn’t functioning properly. 1.5 hours before the start of the endurance, the car died completely – a few printed circuit boards in the accumulator had burned out. This gave us a clue, and soon we found that the isolation on one of the motors’s wires was broken. The problem was fixed 30 minutes before the start, the accumulator was fixed 20 minutes before the start, and we arrived on the starting line just three minutes before the start. We eagerly awaited the awards ceremony, but when the results of the endurance race and overall standings were announced, our name was not called. We went to the judges to find out what was going on. It turned out that the judges’ data logger, which checks the car’s energy consumption, had not worked properly. According to the rules, this means automatic disqualification, and there was no possibility for discussion. In summary, we finished fourth, which is not bad, but the second place was close, which was frustrating. We then went to Hungary, where the FEST22 and driverless car teams met again. Unlike Austria, everything went smoothly there. Technical inspections went smoothly and we achieved good results in static events – both cars earned decent points in the cost report, and we managed to get to the design finals with FEST22. Adding podium places in driving events, second place with FEST22 and third place with the autonomous car were guaranteed in the overall standings! After a pleasant success, we went to Germany for the season’s final and most prestigious race. Although the same data logger was used there as in Austria, with the judges’ guidance, we got it working. The static events went perfectly, we achieved 3rd place in the cost report, and reached the design finals. Reaching the design finals in Germany and winning third place at autocross, are definitely some of the biggest achievements of the team!
